Exile Classics series, No. 16 – Introduction by Daniel David Moses

A Dream Like Mine is a journey into the contemporary issue of radical and violent solutions to stop the destruction of the environment. It is also a journey into the unconscious, and into the nightmare of history, beauty and terror that are the awesome landscape of the Native Canadian spirit world.

The story is fictional but set in the real situation of fights over land rights and environmental pollution in Northern Ontario. Seeking revenge — or is it retributive justice? — a mysterious native named Arthur kidnaps the manager of a polluting paper mill. When a reporter shows up in Ojibway country to do a glib piece on Native American healers, Arthur kidnaps him too, in time realizing this man will either bear witness, or become Arthur’s accomplice, as the elders of the tribe convince the reporter to follow the Ojibway path.

Of A Dream Like Mine Gwendolyn MacEwen wrote "this novel explores the real, unexplored country which lies within the country we think we have conquered. It is brutal and beautiful. Once opened, this book is almost impossible to close until completed. The dream is real!"

"A wonderful novel of obsession, terror and wild strangeness by a man with a strong sense of Native people and of the Native way . . . an extraordinary creation, unforgettable." –Peter Matthiessen

"A Dream Like Mine is intensely vivid and very ambitious as it weaves together the psychological, the historical, and the mythical into a parable that succeeds." –Northrop Frye

"M.T. Kelly never writes a boring sentence... one of the country’s most distinctive prose stylists." –The Vancouver Sun
