Darlene Madott, as a teller of interconnected love stories — stories about women, and the men who enter and exit their lives — has a way of circling moments of unresolved emotional ambiguity, circling until, with a sudden intensity, she slices directly to the heart of experience. What is remarkable about Madott’s women is that they remain open and vulnerable despite betrayal and sorrow: from station to station, they carry their crosses. Each is on a singular pilgrimage, intent on embracing life openly and willingly, seeking something rare in our times — communion with the self through communion with another.

Darlene Madott is a Toronto lawyer and writer. She has worked editorially for Saturday Night and Toronto Life magazines, and written book reviews for the Globe and Mail.
