The Poetry of Giuseppe Ungaretti

Ungaretti is one of the great poets of this century. About his collected work, he wrote, “This old book is a diary. Its author has no other ambition, and he believes that not even the great poets had any other, than to leave behind a beautiful biography.” Ungaretti’s beautiful biography, essentially hermetic in character, is nonetheless universal, a splendid poetic portrait of the spirit of the first half of this century, in Italy, in the whole of Europe. This is the first time anywhere that all of this great poet’s verse has been presented in translation, and that extraordinary translation is by Diego Bastianutti, a Kingston, Ontario, resident who is a fine poet himself.
