Rosenblatt’s writings and drawings are stellar examples of what Henry James meant when he said that literature “makes life, makes interest, makes importance…” As soon as his earliest work, The LSD Leacock, appeared in the early sixties, it was broadly recognized that Rosenblatt’s was a singular voice, the voice of the mendicant appalled by mendacity, and in the crucible of calumny. As is well known, Rosenblatt—a latter-day Francis of Assisi in extremis—has looked out on the corrupt world from within the psyches of various animals…baboons, bees, snakes, fish—and in so doing has managed to make our world of whimsical murderousness somehow beguiling. His genius is represented here with all his experimental poetry; a solid selection of his most important poems; some of his drawings; several critical essays; his autobiographical prose stories and sketches; and a cross-section of letters.
